On this amazing journey aboard the Island Queen, we follow in the wake of early explorers as the captain brings the ship surprisingly up-close to the rugged shoreline of Parry Island and the Bay’s remote outer islands. Meander past granite shoals into narrow channels within an eco-system so unique that it has earned World Biosphere Reserve status from the United Nations. Ships measuring up to 225.5 metres in length (or 740 feet) and 23.8 metres (or 78 feet), in the beam are routinely raised to more than 180 metres above sea level, as high as a 60-story building. The ships are twice as long and half as wide as a football field and carry cargoes the equivalent of 25,000 metric tonnes. Parts of the St. Lawrence River offer dramatic scenery and calm waters, while other areas are wide enough to give a sense of ocean cruising -- and they can feel nearly as turbulent. The majority of cruising on the St. Lawrence is through Northeastern Canada, which is home to nine dominant ports of call.
